350 Volunteers Needed
World Alzheimer’s Day Run For Heroes
Over 3,000 people participate in the run, 350
volunteers needed to assist
Soon Alzheimer’s disease
and other dementias won’t only be about our parent’s generation. It will also be
about ours.
• 747,000 Canadians are living with
Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias today. As our
population ages, this number is
expected to increase to 1.4 million by 2031.
• Today, $33 billion is spent annually
on dementia care; by 2041 this figure will jump to $293
billion per year.
• Alzheimer’s disease is not a normal
part of aging, but age remains a predominant risk factor.
• After age 65, the risk for developing
dementia doubles every five years; baby boomers are
now entering their years of
highest risk.
• Dementia can also occur in people in
their 40s.
• Changes in the brain that lead to
dementia can begin decades before symptoms appear.
• There is still no cure for
Alzheimer’s disease; some medications may temporarily manage the
symptoms, but none can stop, slow
or reverse the disease.
• In absence of a cure, early access to
help, care and support can make a huge difference in the
quality of life for people with
dementia, their caregivers and families.
• No matter the stage of the disease,
the Alzheimer Society offers help and hope.
“
Heroes live amongst us, raise the bar, and make us all better people. This run
allows you to say, ‘I am participating for the person who has made a difference
in my life.’ We celebrate the caregivers of Alzheimer patients. The proceeds of
this event go to fund Caregiver Support Programs at the Alzheimer Society of
Windsor and Essex County.”
